Department of Adult Joint Reconstructive Surgery
Department of Adult Joint Reconstructive Surgery, of Beijing Jishuitan Hospital was founded in 1957. It is one of the traditional key departments in this hospital. Since 1960 to now, the directors listed successively as Guo Xingtang, Wang Jincheng, Zhou Yixiong, Zhou Yixin and Li Yujun, have contributed to the development of this department. Now, the Department of Adult Joint Reconstructive Surgery has a inpatient ward with 45 routine beds, which could be added to 80 beds. There are 30 surgeons, including 12 seniors specialists, engaged in the diagnosis and treatment of various orthopedic diseases (except cancer and trauma), including degenerative joint disease, bone necrosis, various types of arthritis, developmental or metabolic bone diseases, neuromuscular diseases, and bone or joint infection. More than 3000 surgeries were performed every year, as the majority of which, the number of joint replacement increased at an annual growth rate of 20% to 30%.
In 1957, the monocup replacement surgery was first performed in the Department of Adult Joint Reconstructive Surgery. From 1962 to 1972, Doctor Guo Xingtang and colleagues devoted to study on femoral head replacement, and developed a China-made total hip, named “the 72 total hip”, which brought on the first case of total hip arthroplasty in China. In 1975, Doctor Jia Youmin and Doctor Wang Jincheng, performed the first rotational acetabular osteotomy, which is still in use today. Several years ago, the Ganz osteotomy was introduced into clinical use in this department from Europe. By now, it is still one of the few departments in China’s hospitals where a large amount of pelvic osteotomy surgeries can be performed every year.
The Department of Adult Joint Reconstructive Surgery in Beijing Jishuitan Hospital was one of the earliest clinical groups to proceed joint replacement surgery in China. Their practice has accumulated to 30 years of clinical experience. In recent years, more than two thousand cases of joint replacement surgeries were completed each year on average, with both leading quantity and quality in China. The survivorship of primary total joint replacement was more than 90% at 10 years follow-up, according to the results from Maurice Müller’s center.
On April 8th 2002, the first artificial joint registration and assessment center was born in the Department of Adult Joint Reconstructive Surgery in Beijing Jishuitan Hospital. The follow-up data is best preserved in this department.
Many academic journal publication and book chapters have been published, in which more than 200 were accepted by core journals in this country, and more than 10 were accepted SCI journals. More than ten seminars or conferences have been held successfully in this department, with the participants up to 500 people sometimes. Three seniors have been included in the medical expert tank of Beijing. Doctors in this department (Jia Youmin) have won the Science and Technology Progress Award (given by the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Health) for eight times, and gained the State Council special allowance. Doctor Guo Xiaozhong has won the Science and Technology Progress Award, for his research on the relationship between ankylosing spondylitis and HLA-B. Doctor Zhou Yixin was supported by Beijing Nova program of science and technology.
Under remarkable development and grandness over 54 years, the Department of Adult Joint Reconstructive Surgery in Beijing Jishuitan Hospital has reached a leading position in both international and domestic orthopedics field, and is still approaching a higher level of diagnosis, treatment, education and research. Everything happened here today, is contributing to the future of every patient.
